Crane Collapse in Union County Closes Route 15

UNION TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A crane came crashing down in Union County Tuesday night.

UNION TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A crane came crashing down onto a bridge near Winfield Tuesday night and is blocking both lanes of Route 15. About five miles of Route 15 is closed along the Union and Snyder County line.

"If you know the back roads, you can kind of find your way around, but if you aren't from the area, it would be very, very confusing," said Mike Martin.

PennDOT officials do not know what caused the accident but say the main priority is getting it cleaned up and making sure the area is safe. The crane is part of PennDOT's Central Susquehanna Valley Throughway project.

So far, it's been a headache for drivers. Because of this accident and some road projects in the area, traffic has been a nightmare. Northumberland's Duke Street project already has a truck detour.

"You only have one or two bridges that you can get across the river, so even if any of those arteries are closed, you don't have much of a choice. Now that (Routes) 11 and 15 are closed, it's really causing a heck of a tie-up," Martin said.

PennDOT expects Route 15 to be closed through the weekend between Route 304 in Winfield and Route 11 in Monroe Township. There are three different detours in place.

This is a heavily traveled roadway and there is a lot going on this weekend. The Little League World Series starts Thursday and Sunbury's River Festival is this weekend.
