HAZLETON -- Police are investigating a deadly shooting in the area of a playground in Hazleton.

Police were called to the area of the Pine Street playground around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators say a 20-year-old man was shot along North Pine Street and died at the hospital.   He was taken there in a private vehicle.  the victim's name has not been released.  Hazleton Police Chief Jerry Speziale said "our thoughts and prayers are with the family."  The chief did not say what led to the gunfire.  They believe no one else was hurt.

Several yellow evidence markers could be seen on the street near the playground.

Officers have not said if there are any suspects.

This is the first homicide of 2017 in the city of Hazleton.

Anyone like the direction this area is going? Anyone have A relocation guide for Hazleton or the skook I could borrow?/.

A lot of people here like riding the fire trucks and watching kids play sports. You can bet there’s some intelligent arguments behind the bleachers where John and Eddy are drunk kissing while Coach checks his toilet cams.

Hazleton and its smaller nearby sister sister Shenandoah should just be condemned. The multicultural influx made things worse less face it. Then throw in designer drugs and corrupt leadership, it is a total mess. These places were better off when it was just people fighting over ugly women, perogies and beer.

Man, the comments on this page are straight up cancerous. A twenty year old kid just had his life taken from him and instead of people giving their condolences you got a bunch of inbred rednecks talking about “these damn illegals.” No respect whatsoever which doesn’t surprise me considering most of these hicks were brought up in a trailer in the middle of nowhere where having sex with your cousins is considered normal. People blame “the Hispanics” for “being lazy” and making Hazleton a decrepit mess yet they’re totally in denial about the fact that coal mining is a dead industry, which is obviously detrimental being that this town is funded by it. Crazy how that works, right? But go on Alter Street or Diamond Ave and you’ll see all sorts of businesses such as restaurants, bodegas, etc. owned by…*gasp* Dominicans! Clearly they’re making some economical progress so you can’t blame them for “being lazy.” None of them decided to move straight from the DR to Hazleton. Most of them came from NYC and its surrounding metropolitan area and were forced to leave because of the high costs of living caused by gentrification, and they chose Hazleton because it was cheap and only a two hour drive away from their friends and family. Nobody decides to move from NYC to some irrelevant little town in the mountains filled with rednecks and no job opportunities because they WANT to, and if you think otherwise you’re truly deluded. If Hazleton is getting too “diverse” for you then move to the south and stop complaining. Hazleton sucks because of the people that are stuck in the 1950s that are afraid of progress, that’s it.

The vast majority of the young latinos in Hazleton were born in the US and moved to Hazleton for economic reasons. Hazleton’s business community courted low pay, low skill employers to the area and thousands of employees have followed, when there are no high pay or even medium pay jobs available then all the educated people leave and people who live in poverty commit crime at a higher rate. It is why the South has the highest crime rates by region. It’s not hard, folks, follow the money.

1/3 the population of scranton and 10 times the violence.

Maybe all the protestors should pay attention to the diverse cities.

Hey you…… Luzerne County, Mexico called and they want their Hazleton back…..

Oh, don’t blame me for Latinos crisis. I don’t open the border either. In Texas, I have lot of educated, degrees, and professional Latinos friends there. American Latinos do have problems with immigrants there. They complained about their behavior, crime, drunks, trash, you name it.

Nothing is ever a random shooting. Drugs deal gone bad, gangs or fight? The outcome is the same. No protests no angry comments because it wasn’t a cop who did this . The incident will be forgotten..but another body gets buried.

I’ve known Carlos Luna ever since high school, I even graduated with him. He was a good person, he was respectful to me and to my old broadcasting teacher. Carlos will be missed.

The legend in his own mind Jerry Speziale is still the part time chief of police? Isn’t it about time to hire a real chief who actually lives in Pa not a Jersey Commuter.

Lou Barlletta tried to clean up hazelton and they resisted. So now the town has disintegrated into a war zone and they expect us to be sympathetic. They know who’s illegal and who the bad apples are but they naively refuse to give them up. This is what happens, is anyone surprised? They are self imposed victims. You can’t take people from 3rd world countries and put then in 1st world countries and expect them to act according to our standards. They are a danger to our society because they come from violent countries and bring that experience here. Hazelton is a shining example of why we have immigration laws. Some of them just aren’t fit to be here, but for now we’re all stuck with them, some to a lesser degree and some otherwise. No one wants to hear about people getting shot and killed in our own backyards. But it’s the reality.

    • Don't worry bout me 😉

Carlos, the victim, nor the friends and present parties of the time of this incident, are from a “3rd world country” They were moved to Hazleton just close to, or maybe a little more than 10 years ago from neighboring states, or even from right here in Pennsylvania. Their behavoior is not a result of their ethnicity or place of birth, it is the flashy societal figures they look up to, like these rappers, and the fast money, live fast die fun, drug culture. They get brainwashed and surrounded by it then become it. RIP Carlos. You didn’t deserve this fate or legacy, but God had specific plans for you and needed you on the other side. R.I.P. And may we pray Justice gets served for the guilty party.

    • Are you for real?

“And another one gone and another one gone. Another one bites the dust.. hey they’re going get you too.another one bites the dust”

  • CeeMe

So what else is new in Hazleton? They are nothing more than a crime ridden town anymore, now that it’s overrun with diversity/criminals. Near a playground yet. A new low.

Deepest condolences to this young man’s family. As a mother of an 8 year old boy, I realize that my greatest fear is the tragic reality of another mother today. It is so very unfortunate that politics and entitlement is overcasting the value of life lost too soon. Sadly, for many it takes tragedy in ones own life to acknowledge how pretentious it is to make such cruel and irresponsible claims.

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

      ~Mother Teresa

OK, so now good, legal immigrants are being killed. No one here has a problem with good and legal. Maybe he was as you say, but unless this was a random shooting, he hung out with not so good people. Just saying, not judging.
