Pennsylvania Enacts ‘Stolen Valor’ Law, Penalizing Those Who Lie About Veteran Status

HARRISBURG -- It's now a crime in Pennsylvania if you lie about your military service just to get certain benefits.

Governor Tom Wolf signed into law the "Stolen Valor Act," which punishes those who try to receive money, benefits or other opportunities by impersonating a member of the military or someone who received a service medal.

"That's really inexcusable," said Governor Wolf. "It's actually offensive to the memories of our veterans and it should be offensive to everybody in Pennsylvania."

Pennsylvania has the fourth most veterans in the country, totaling more than 900,000.

For eight years, Joe Doherty of Gillett has raised money for the Bradford County Veterans Memorial Park. Doherty admits fundraising can be tough because there are those out there who will pose as a veteran.

"To have somebody else try to steal that glory and to get something they don't deserve, it bothers me immensely," said this Marine Corps veteran.

"I think it happens a lot," said Roy Schrimp of Towanda. "It's about time they did something to help this out."

Schrimp sees the signs on the streets all the time, where alleged homeless veterans ask for food or money and who won't confirm their service status.

"We try to tell them that every city has a veterans person that will represent them if they need help," he explained. "And half of them just want the money! They just want the money and they aren't veterans and it just makes you sad."

Those who get convicted of this misdemeanor could face fines and up to a year in jail.

    Thanks Governor Wolf for ‘making’ a law that already existed: “The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 was signed by President Barack Obama on June 3, 2013. The Act makes it a federal crime to fraudulently claim to be a recipient of certain military decorations or medals in order to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit.” Glad to see you’re coming up with new things…

    Great – now I can’t get my free dinner at Perkins on Veteran’s Day. As long as they repeal the 2nd and 4th amendments though I’m OK with it.

      Just those who gave up their personal lives to serve their country so others that did nothing could have the right to sit at home and make crude ignorant posts, you’re welcome.

        I hate to bust your bubble, but not every serviceman or woman is a knight in shining armor. Some of them are maladjusted borderline psychopaths that can’t fit into society or hold a real job. Once they leave the military they’ve lost their security blanket and wander aimlessly through life. Uncle Sam is OK with that because the weak minded are easier to brainwash and program. Don’t get me wrong, there are some fine people in the military as well but you’re kidding yourself to think that they are all honorable and worthy of the title.

      At “Love not war”… I get you are not for the Military, but how many freedoms do you enjoy that you have been able to KEEP as a result of the veterans protecting them? If you can’t understand that, then I feel sorry for you.

        Who was gonna take away any of my freedoms in the last 70 years? Russia? Good, Russia is a better country anyways. They don’t have illegal Mexicans, ghetto thugs and hood rats on welfare. Putin wouldn’t tolerate that crap for a second. Russia is pure. White race only! The USA is a racial cesspool. I hate living here! I want out but I can’t leave because our crappy economy has left me pennyless.
        Maybe I’ll have to settle for Canada again.

        @Love Not War
        Then leave you racist unpatriotic twat. You are undeserving of the freedom you take for granted
