UPDATE (8/21/16) -- The owners of the cockatiel have picked up their pet, and the bird is back home.

(Original story)

STROUDSBURG -- It's not the typical runaway Stroud Area Regional Police are used to dealing with.

An officer took a cockatiel into custody after it was found roaming about Stroudsburg.

"Beautiful bird, beautiful bird. People here were like, 'Oh I want to get the bird, get the bird," said Scott Karaman, Stroudsburg Pool Manager.

The yellow and white cockatiel was taken by police to Barton Heights Veterinary Hospital in Stroud Township.

Veterinarians there have been watching over it.

It's unclear how old the bird is or if it's a he or a she. All they know is that it's very friendly.

"They brought it here. He did tell us that it rode his finger the whole way, and so it looks like it's friendly and it's looking like it needs to find its home," said Jaime Koeser, Veterinary Technician.

It was in the area of Stroudsburg High School where the cockatiel landed on someone's head. Some people we spoke to tell us this isn't the first time a cockatiel has been spotted in this area.

Scott Karaman is the pool manager at Stroudsburg pool. He tried to catch the bird when he first saw it in this tree, but it flew away.

"I was up on the deck and we seen a white object in the tree and it was a bird so we all walked over there to see if we could call it to come in but it did not want to come in," said Karaman.

Elia Roselle from Stroudsburg wasn't in the area when the bird was caught, but wonders if it's the same cockatiel she helped catch once before.

"About a year, year and a half ago, I was driving down Main Street and on the corner of Featherman there were a group of people gathered and there was a cockatiel stuck in the tree so I stopped as well. Maybe this bird is the baby of the other wondering cockatiel," said Elia Roselle, Stroudsburg.

If you are or you know the owner of this cockatiel, you are asked to call Barton Heights Veterinary Hospital at 570-424-6773.
