NEW MILFORD -- It was a packed house inside the First United Methodist Church in New Milford as a grassroots effort began to stop the construction of a potential incinerator and industrial park in the area.

There are no formal plans or proposals put forth yet, but investors are looking at options for a potential waste incinerator and industrial park near the Gibson exit of Interstate 81.

Susquehanna county officials tell Newswatch16 that the Tyler Corners Group plans to buy the land, develop it, and use natural gas to burn waste products

Burr Darrow lives less than four miles away from the proposed site.

"I have pulmonary fibrosis and I have four grandchildren and I don't want them to get what I got," Darrow explained. "And I had one grandchild killed by a truck and they'll bring truck traffic and I don't want to see more truck traffic."

"We could use a lot of stuff but as far as things that are going to pollute the environment or add toxins in the air or give the kids asthma, I'm against that totally," said Ruth Ralson of New Milford township.

A planning reports suggest the possibility of construction starting as early as 2018, but a Susquehanna County Commissioner says there is a still a lot of approval that's needed before it even reaches that point.

"We know the planning commission hasn't received any plans, as far as I know DEP has not received anything, we have not seen any permits requested by DEP," Commissioner Alan Hall said.

For Hall, it's surprising just how little information has been brought forth so far.

"This company has not held any public meetings, or tried to do anything publicly to let people know," Hall added. "So there's a lot of concerns about the forthright of this company and what they're trying to do."
