BLOOMSBURG -- Instead of sitting behind desks, students from Bloomsburg University took their work outside the classroom, and volunteered for the Women's Center of Columbia and Montour Counties.

The students painted teal ribbons and other messages on store windows to raise awareness about sexual assault.

"Because we can relate to the victims so much, we're all on the same level, it's important for them to see that they can relate to someone that's helping out and understands," Maggie Temmel said.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month around the country, and the color teal symbolizes sexual assault awareness and prevention.

"Last year, we did it for the first time and we had over 56 businesses so this year we're hoping to top that," Christiana Paradis said.

These signs encouraging people to speak up against sexual assault are hanging up inside the bathrooms of most of the bars in Bloomsburg.

"We just wanted to make the community aware that this is a problem that's on our radar and we're not tolerating it in Columbia and Montour Counties. I think it's great to see all the businesses come out and support it as well and spread that message," Paradis said.

Store windows in Danville are also being painted. The teal designs will stay up all throughout the month of April.
