SELINSGROVE -- A 9-year-old girl in Selinsgrove wants to make her community safer.

On Monday, the little girl took it upon herself and spoke at the borough council meeting.

"Vandalism has been on the rise in Selinsgrove."

That was part of Hilde Lysiak's speech she gave in front of the Selinsgrove Borough Council.

While looking for stories for her neighborhood newspaper, the 9 year old noticed an increase in vandalism.

Now, she's asking the borough to hire another police officer.

Hilde Lysiak with The Orange Street News said, "[Reporter: do you think its important for young people to come to these council meetings?] Yeah, if you're a newspaper reporter like me, then definitely!"

Hilde is even helping to raise the money to pay for the officer's salary. The borough did already have plans to hire one.
