HAMILTON TOWNSHIP --Trotting like turkeys, kids at Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center near Bartonsville are "gobbling" up all of the information they can find on this bird found in the Poconos.

"It was to get them to understand what turkeys need, what they like to eat, where they live, how they survive,” said environmental educator Karen Boyle.

After a quick brainstorming session, the kids say they know what a turkey needs to get by in its natural habitat.

"They need food, water, space, and they need lots of oxygen,” said 8-year-old Ellie Balas.

The week-long nature camp had the kids trot to try to gather the basic turkey needs for themselves.

"We're trying to get the water and the food,” said 8-year-old Nathaniel Leiser.

But "predators" soon got in the way. Boyle says after all of the food and water was gobbled up, these 7 and 8 year olds began to understand just how this population is kept safe.

"We need to have a way to track that and monitor it so there aren't starving animals out there and that's where we talked about the game commission,” said Boyle.

They’re discovering how officials work to save animals and habitats for generations to come.

"The cool thing about it is they don't even realize that they're learning because they're having fun doing it,” said Boyle.
