ANTHONY TOWNSHIP -- Social studies students from Danville Middle School were out Monday putting flags on the graves of veterans buried in cemeteries all over Montour County.

The Exchange Community Cemetery near Washingtonville is filled with graves of veterans. Eighth grade students from Danville Middle School made sure each veteran's grave had a brand new American flag on it, just in time for Memorial Day.

"It's pretty cool and it's a very nice day, so it's nice to be out and placing flags and everything," said eighth grader James Zola.

The flag program is a partnership between Danville Middle School and the Montour County Office of Veterans Affairs. Director Doug Resseguie says his office supplied the 400 flags that were placed in 17 cemeteries.

"We do this as a way of educating the students about Memorial Day and about honoring our veterans that have served and have died for our country," said Resseguie.

The students' teacher says the kids are currently learning about veterans and different wars at school, so this is a way to take their lessons outside the classroom.

"It's just cool to see how there are veterans that come from around here and fight in so many wars. It's just cool that people come from all over to come together and fight," said eighth grader Eric Sees.

Vietnam veteran Jim Vomshock rode along with the students and spoke to them about his time overseas.

"It's a tribute to the community to have them out here and it's an honor to be here with them," Vomshock said.

The students were chosen from more than 100 kids in their class to participate in the flag program.
