TOBYHANNA STATE PARK -- If you're thinking of enjoying the great outdoors this summer, but have never camped before, Tobyhanna State Park has a program you may want to take advantage of.

Memorial Day weekend will bring lots of folks to the Poconos to kick off the unofficial start to summer. And if you're new to camping, you can get all of the gear you need to give it a try at Tobyhanna State Park for just $20.

Workers at Tobyhanna State Park were busy putting out the buoys Monday, getting last-minute preparations done before the busy holiday weekend ahead.

"I have to finish all of this and clean up all that seaweed. And we have another park to string up by Friday," said Arthur Csaszar, maintenance worker.

If you've never camped out, the state park has a sweet deal for you. It's an effort to get more people comfortable with the great outdoors.

"First time camper, some people are a little hesitant about the woods, the animals, what to bring," said Tonya Doney, Tobyhanna State Park.

So they'll lend you all of the equipment you need: a chair, lanterns, a propane grill, flashlights, and even a tent with sleeping pads.

Park officials say they'll help campers set up, and even help with questions, all for just $20.

People who use this park say it's a great deal for anyone willing to give camping a try.

"Especially for people who come from the city, it lets them try it without investing because it's not cheap to set up for a camp. And if you don't like it, you've got all this stuff and what do you do with it," said Coolbaugh Township resident Julie Canuteson.

Visitors can only take advantage of this camping program once, but officials at Tobyhanna State park say they've had plenty of happy campers refer other family and friends.

"I've had people use it one time and then come back as a regular camper because they had such a great experience," said Doney.

The first time camper program is available on a first-come, first-served basis. All you have to do is call.

"It's a good place to start camping. I've stayed in the campsites. They're really nice and they have a lot of grass."

Tobyhanna State Park is one of more than a dozen state parks across the commonwealth that offer the first-time camper program

The program kicks off Memorial Day weekend and runs through the summer.
