LEWISBURG -- Officials with Bucknell University now say they may delay a fraternity's return to campus.

Bucknell shut down its Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter in 2011 following alcohol and hazing violations.

SAE is the same fraternity at the center of a national racial controversy.

The fraternity was supposed to be allowed back on Bucknell's campus next year.

Officials with Bucknell released a statement Wednesday:

Following the 2011 suspension of the SAE chapter at Bucknell, the University worked with SAE's national office to establish a timeline for reinstatement. The result was that the suspension was to be lifted incrementally beginning in spring 2015 so that the fraternity could begin recruitment, with an anticipated return to campus housing in fall 2016.

However, due to the the racist, hateful videos that have surfaced involving SAE members at a chapter in Oklahoma, we are currently exploring with SAE's national office delaying the fraternity's return to Bucknell. This would not be a punitive measure; when the fraternity returns to Bucknell, we want it to be successful from a recruitment perspective so that it is able to benefit its members and make meaningful contributions to our campus community. We're concerned that that is not possible given the climate currently surrounding SAE nationally.
