WILKES-BARRE -- Hugo Selenski had no comment on the way out of the Luzerne County courthouse Wednesday night.

In just under two hours, jurors decided Selenski deserves life behind bars for murdering Michael Kerkowski and Tammy Fassett, not the death penalty.

Some of Selenski's family members were in the courtroom to hear the verdict.

"There's no good outcome. It was the better of the two," said his sister, Laura Strutko.

"It's a lose-lose situation, but we're happy at least we get to see him for the rest of his life," said his daughter Rachael McCuen.

No one from the victims' families wanted to speak after the verdict, though Michael Kerkowski's son tweeted a picture of his father and wrote, "There is no winner. I will never have my father back. But maybe now there can be closure and justice for my family. Hugo can rot in jail."

Prosecutors also did not speak on camera. Off-camera, they said justice has been served.

Selenski's defense team is glad he avoided the death penalty.

"I think it's very, very important to note that the jury was unanimous on the verdict for life and that was important for us," said Bernard Brown, one of Selenski's attorneys.

Selenski is due back in court to be formally sentenced on March 27.

After his sentence was read Selenski sat down with Newswatch 16. Click here to see what he had to say.
