WILKES-BARRE – At a troubled housing complex known for violence, a man who bounced back from homelessness is now using martial arts to teach residents how to defend themselves.

“My daughter started last week and she had a good time. She came home trying to practice on me,” said Tanique Hudson. “Nowadays, you might have to (use self-defense) especially growing up in these times, between violence that`s going on with women, at home with their husbands.”

Her instructor is Bryant Carter, an army veteran from Detroit who moved to Scranton.

Carter says his kickboxing business went under and he was living on the streets before he moved to Wilkes-Barre and got a job as a chef at a hotel.

"It hit me, I had a vision to go to Wilkes-Barre, open up a school, start a whole new life,” said Carter.

Along with the fitness and self-defense classes, Sabrine Brillon says Carter has also provided her with the inspiration to start a cleaning business.

"It`s a gift from God and I can`t complain. Its moving me forward and its helping my family,” said Brillon. “Everyone here is a family. They have jobs you know, there are just a few people that make it look bad but it’s not what everyone thinks it is.”

The classes are held for kids and adults every Thursday afternoon at the recreation room inside the Sherman Hills high rise.
