WILKES-BARRE -- The doctor known for his unorthodox outfits and red clown noses stopped by Wilkes University to visit with nursing and pharmacy students.

Dr. Patch Adams told students about the Gesundheit Institute that he founded in West Virginia, which focuses on holistic healthcare, as well as his mission of healing with humor.

Following a presentation in the Darte Center for the Performing Arts, Adams walked with students through campus.

“You just forget that he is a physician,” said Elham Takin. “You just come back like, 'Oh my God! Whatever he’s saying, he means that.'”

Adams' visit comes a few weeks after Robin Williams took his own life. Williams starred in the 1998 comedy based of Adams’ life.

Adams told students that he was not a big fan of the film, but that Williams was one of the kindest actors that he ever met.

“It’s such a tragedy. And at least we can find some peace in knowing that he’s no longer in pain,” said Catherine Jackson. “The Patch Adams story was one of the main reasons why I wanted to originally go into health care. So just being here right now is surreal for me.”
