WALKER TOWNSHIP --The expansion of a business in Schuylkill County means a well-known store has closed for good.
Charlotte Solt works in what some call cramped quarters at Koch's Turkey Farm near Tamaqua. Charlotte said she shares the office with several employees and the tight space complicates her job.
"It's hard to hear on the phones. There is not enough room for our paperwork, just not enough room, a lot of interruptions."
But that's about to change. Solt and her co-workers will get more working space. That's because the well-known Koch's Turkey Farm store that occupied the other side of the building has closed and will be converted into offices.
Co-owner Duane Koch explained closing the store wasn't an easy decision.
"It's sad in a way and a lot of our customers are sad that, I guess it's all about location, location, location and we really don't do enough sales to have it open year round."
Although the store is closed around the Thanksgiving season, the Koch's will set up a tent in front of the store where you can still get their product.
The Kochs raise nearly three quarter of a million turkeys every year. They are sold in stores all over the east coast and beyond.
With the Koch's store closing, nearby grocery stores hope to pick up the slack.
That includes William McMullen, the owner of McMullen's Market in New Philadelphia.
"I live in that area and I know the family and I know it's a good product, a very premium product, and hopefully there will be a demand and come into my market for their product," McMullen said.
So make no mistake, the Koch Turkey Farm store is closed but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice munching on their product.
