SCRANTON–
The streets of Scranton are buzzing with excitement this weekend as thousands head to the Electric City for a number of festivals and events.
The annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament attracted a large crowd on Saturday afternoon.
The three day event has Wyoming Avenue closed through Sunday.
“This year we have about 75 teams playing and that constitutes probably 300 kids and all their family and friends that are coming out,” said Jim Rodway, Lackawanna County Deputy Director of Community Relations.
Kids participating in the event said it’s a good way to get out of the house and have some fun.
“It gives kids the chance to stop staying around like areas around their homes, come outside and have fun,” said 17-year-old Darrell Cintron of Moosic.
Just a few blocks away, the 9th annual Scranton Jazz Festival is being held at the Radisson Hotel along Lackawanna Avenue.
Shows will continue Saturday and Sunday night.
If you’re near the University of Scranton campus you might notice a large crowd. The annual Catholic Charistmatic Renewal Convention is being held at the John Long Center on Linden Street.
Organizers tell Newswatch 16 that they saw more than 2,000 people at the event last year.
“An event like this is really cool because people are just expressing how they feel about their faith and they have no reservations about it,” said Full Armor band member, Douglas Hutchings.
For kids that are at the convention — they said they’re having a blast. Nine-year-old Grace Kapacs of Scranton said she is thankful that she is there.
“I know I’m very lucky to be able to come and to help out with the kids track and to be able to go and to listen to people talk about Jesus and God . I just think it’s a great thing for everybody to be able to go to,” said 9-year-old Grace Kapacs of Scranton.
All three of the events will continue through Sunday.
