Jews around the world paused this week to remember those lost in the Holocaust.

Thursday night the Jewish Community Center in Scranton hosted a service for Yom Hashoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, which ended at sundown.

The Holocaust is the period between 1933 and 1945 when Adolf Hitler carried out a campaign to exterminate Jews and other minorities in Nazi-controlled territory.

“It’s very important and it’s something that needs to be passed on from generation to generation to learn about in order to prevent any sort of genocide like what happened during World War II ever happening again,” said the executive director of the JCC Dan Cardonick.

Holocaust Remembrance Day falls on the anniversary of the Jewish uprising against the Nazis in the Warsaw ghetto in Poland 69 years ago.
