SCRANTON -- It was an important delivery to the West Scranton Intermediate School as a cooler of bagged lunches was dropped off Monday afternoon.

It was one of three deliveries of food all part of an emergency lunch program as Scranton teachers continue to strike and walk the picket line.

"Well it helps my parents more than spending more money to buy more lunch since she has kids in the house so it helps us more," Yvette John said.

Yvette John and her friends stopped to pick up milk and a brown bag lunch.

Inside the bag, students are getting a sandwich, fruit, and vegetable just like they would get at school.

The food is prepared by Aramark, the same company that serves the district when school is in session.

"There are hundreds of students in our district that depend on these meals everyday, so to make sure they are getting fed while they're at home right now is really important. We know that they are in need of these meals," Angelina Sickora of Aramark said.

Scranton School District is one of the largest school districts in our area with roughly 10,000 students.

Students and families say a bagged lunch during the strike goes a long way.

Sherry Roberts brought her granddaughter to get a free lunch. She's grateful this is being done to help out families like hers.

"With the teachers being on strike I heard that they were giving out the lunches for school and every little bit helps," Roberts said.

Meanwhile a few blocks away teachers continue to walk the picket line. Students say they can only hope they'll be back in school soon.

"It's been pretty boring not having any education at the house. I mean I pretty much miss it," Izabella Mateo said.

Scranton Area School District said the emergency lunch program will continue through the end of the strike.

The emergency lunch program was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Division of Food and Nutrition.

Students in the district can pick up lunch between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the following locations: Everhart Museum, Connell Park, Weston Field, Weston Park and West Scranton Intermediate School Practice Field.
