SCRANTON -- Striking teachers in Scranton got some national help in their efforts Monday.

The head of the American Federation of Teachers joined the Scranton Federation of Teachers to rally on Monday and deliver boxes of 11,000 signatures to the Scranton School District.

The petition says educators need and deserve a fair contract.

"Any superintendent worth his or her salt in a situation like that would actually immediately try to bring people together and convince people of an agenda, not come in and try to rip asunder the support of a contract that is there to serve the kids," said Randi Weingarten, American Federation of Teachers.

Teachers say they're striking because of issues like salary, class size, and healthcare.

While the strike continues, the district has begun providing lunches for its students who are eligible for a free lunch.
