LUZERNE BOROUGH – Authorities said they plan on filing charges in juvenile court against a Wyoming Valley West high school student who was accused of repeatedly punching a middle school student near a bus stop.

Luzerne Borough Police Chief Patricia O’Donnell said the fight, which happened late last month near Charles Street Park, was recorded on a cell phone camera and posted online by another student.

Wyoming Valley West School District Superintendent Charles Suppon told Newswatch 16 that administrators have taken disciplinary action against the freshman, who was not permitted to be on the bus that dropped the middle school student off in Luzerne Borough.

Suppon said he’s hopeful students will speak up or safely intervene in future altercations, after video of the fight circulated online.

“We're one large family. We need to look out for one another. If there's anything that a student can do to prevent something, I always tell our students ‘treat others as you would want to be treated yourself,’” said Suppon. "Our principals are actively dealing with this situation. Our high school wants someone with authority to come in and tell high school students that acts of violence will not be tolerated and there are consequences for our actions."

Suppon said the district has a zero-tolerance policy on violence and bullying.
