  • Homeless Shelter to Reopen in Lackawanna County

    SCRANTON — After deciding last month that it would close its doors, an area shelter decided to cancel those plans and reopen. The Bethel AME Church on North Washington Avenue in Scranton announced back in November that due to lack of volunteers they wouldn’t be able to take anyone in.   • Two Cars Collide in Parking Lot in Lackawanna County

    SCRANTON — A crash caused some damage in one part of Lackawanna County on Sunday. Around 4 p.m., two vehicles collided along Luzerne Street in Scranton. It happened in the parking lot of Portanova Body Shop. One of the vehicles took out a sign and was wedged between two poles. No one was injured and there is no word on what caused the crash.

  • Fire Destroys Vacation Home in Monroe County

    TOBYHANNA TOWNSHIP — A large fire destroyed a home in Monroe County. The fire broke out just after 12 p.m. on Sunday near Pocono Lake. Tobyhanna and Thornhurst fire companies responded to the scene on Towanda Trail. Fire officials told Newswatch 16 it is a vacation home, and no one was there at the time. There is no word on what sparked the flames in Monroe County.

  • The American Red Cross is Helping Fire Victims in Monroe County

    POCONO TOWNSHIP — The American Red Cross is assisting victims of a fire in Monroe County. The alarm on Pine Tree Drive in Pocono Township came in just before 11 Saturday night. Firefighters believe the fire started in the chimney and the flames spread to the rest of the home. Everyone made it out of the home and no one was hurt in that overnight fire.

  • Roaring Twenties Brought Back in Scranton

    SCRANTON — Newswatch 16 stopped by the Marketplace at Steamtown on Sunday for their “Festival of Trees” exhibit. The Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department held the event with a theme of the “Roaring Twenties”. A site F-Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda might enjoy.     PALMERTON — A family from Carbon County added another Eagle Scout to its ranks. Mason George was awarded the honor at a ceremony in Palmerton on Saturday.     POCONO TOWNSHIP — Crews were back on the scene of a house fire in the Poconos on Sunday. A fire originally broke out at a home in Pocono Township Saturday but rekindled on Sunday. The fire spread to another structure on Sylvan Cascade Road, and officials ruled the home a total loss.
