WAYMART, Pa. -- 26-year-old Rachel Byrd of Carbondale, was taken into the Wayne County courthouse in Honesdale for her arraignment on Monday. Police say she robbed the Uni-Mart in Waymart just after 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
Investigators say Byrd lured the overnight clerk outside of the Uni-Mart, saying there was a dead animal on the hood of his truck.
When the two went back into the store, Byrd struck the victim over the head with a baton, flashed what appeared to be a handgun and tied the man's hands together with duct tape.
Police say Byrd then stole more than $500.
"This world we're living in is going to hell. That's my initial reaction. I've lived in Wayne County my entire life. I'm 55 years old and it's getting worse every day," said Bonnie Davis of Elk Lake.
"I was a little worried because I'm here every day with my three-year-old, so it scares me a little bit to know that something like that can happen while we're here," said Stacy Davis, Carbondale.
According to arrest papers, Byrd actually worked at the Uni-Mart until March of this year.
Newswatch 16 spoke with several people who come here often. They say that as soon as they saw the surveillance photos, they had an idea the alleged robber was in fact, Byrd.
"We always joked around. She seemed like a decent person, except we knew she was on the juice. She took drugs. Other than that, I didn't think she was capable of doing what she did," said Billy Wolf of Waymart.
"I was about 99% certain who it was. Anybody who does a stupid thing like that deserves to be caught," said Leonard Griffiths of Waymart,
Now arrest papers also show that Byrd texted her boyfriend's mom on Sunday, saying she had obtained bail money for her boyfriend, Nicholas Mata.
Mata was locked up at Wayne County prison at the time of the robbery but was bailed out of prison the night of the robbery. His bail was $500.
