WEST BRUNSWICK TOWNSHIP -- Many of us have heard of Yuengling Lager, but coming soon to a store near you: Yuengling ice cream.
Yuengling made ice cream years ago and it helped the company survive at a time when beer was banned.
The production line at the Leiby's Ice Cream plant near Tamaqua makes their own brand of the tasty stuff. They also make ice cream under different brand names.
"We manufacture for companies in Atlanta, metropolitan New York, California, working on a project in New Orleans right now," said Bill Parks with Leiby's Ice Cream.
Soon Leiby's will be making ice cream under the name of Yuengling. That may sound familiar because there is the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville.
There is no business connection between the beer maker and the ice cream company. That doesn't mean there isn't a family connection. Dave Yuengling gave up a computer programming job to help start Yuengling's Ice Cream.
"I have a real passion for the family business, in the ice cream that we made, and this gives me the opportunity to stay home and not have to travel so much," Yuengling said.
The ice cream company helped the Yuengling family earn money during Prohibition when alcohol was banned. Yuengling stopped making ice cream nearly 30 years ago.
"Creamy," said Joe Kupchinsky. "It was really nice and I missed it when it went off the market and looking forward to buying it again."
Others believe having the name Yuengling on the ice cream will draw customers.
"It may get people to buy their first product and they're not going to buy ice cream if they don't like it, so that's why we wanted to make a high quality ice cream," said Rob Bohorad of Yuengling's Ice Cream.
A building near Orwigsburg will be the corporate headquarters for Yuengling's Ice Cream.
The first cartons of vanilla, chocolate, black and tan and other flavors, should be in stores next March.
