POCONO TOWNSHIP -- Police were on hand to keep people from venturing into the abandoned Birchwood Resort near Tannersville in Monroe County.
A steady stream of traffic passed by. People wanted to check out the spot where after seven weeks of searching, accused cop killer Eric Frein was finally found by U.S. Marshals outside an old hangar on the air strip.
Vinny and Joan Nyegaard of Gilbert remember flying their plane to the resort and wanted to see it again with their own eyes.
"We used to come out here and work in the hangars. That is why the hangar looked so familiar to me," said Vinny Nyegaard.
The couple was surprised that a place so many people had forgotten was where the riveting search for Frein ended.
"Kind of surprised because I thought maybe he left the country, you know? But then we found out," said Joan Nyegaard.
There are many places to hide in the old Birchwood Resort, but marshals said they had a hunch the hanger was where Frien might be hiding.
The resort sits right next to a residential neighborhood where folks are still marveling that the infamous fugitive was found in their backyard.
"It's something that we never expected: him to be so close. We thought he was in the Canadensis/Mountian Home area. He traveled quite a ways," said Scott Handley of Pocono Township.
Now that Birchwood is back on the map some residents are concerned what sort of people might be drawn here.
"Hopefully they are looking at maybe tearing the place down, closing it up so nobody else can come here, curiosity seekers, people who just want to hang out," said William Cook of Pocono Township.
