WILKES-BARRE -- The Wilkes-Barre Area School district is deciding the site of a possible new high school.

There are a total of seven options, but it appears that rebuilding Coughlin High School on North Washington Street or Meyers High School on Carey Avenue are getting the most attention.

"It concerns me because there's not parking in either place and they're both in a flood plain," said resident Libby Yeager.

Yeager went to Meyers and has a granddaughter at Coughlin. She says pressure from students and graduates from both schools may be influencing the school board to build at one of those locations.

"I think they're looking to build at those places because they'll get less public stress."

The school board talked about possibly saving GAR High, and rebuilding at either Coughlin or Meyers. But some parents say the school district should look beyond its current schools. She wants them to focus on a different location, perhaps Wilkes-Barre Township.

"It's out of the city, and yet, it's centrally located for even our Bear Creek students, Laflin students, and even the south students. it may be a viable plan for everybody."

But some people say the district should just build one central high school because they think that could save the district money.

"It would probably be easier to just go on to one place instead of having three different places to go to," said city resident Bonnie Zotte.

"I'm not sure where they should build, I just think they should look at parking and the flood plains," Yeager added.

The Wilkes-Barre Area school board stresses nothing has been decided. Its next meeting is June 8, and a vote could follow a few days later.
