PITTSTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Shoppers at The Pittston Commons on North Township Boulevard in Pittston Township say a building there has been vacant for far too long.
"Every time we come down here, we'll say, 'Why doesn't somebody put something in our store?' And we also feel that chain effect;t they're going with less and less people they don't move in this area," said Jeanie Chase of Bear Creek Township.
"I'd rather have neighbors than a vacant building on my side of me," said Ray DelPriore of Dupont.
That will soon become a reality as Tractor Supply Company is planning to move into the space, which was once a K-mart.
"Good to repurpose a building rather than just sitting derelict like this can be nothing but good," said DelPriore.
"We were lucky because we went out in Hanover all the time or Mount Pocono, which is just as far," said Chase.
In addition to feed and gardening supplies, some shoppers are hoping to find other surprises when the store opens.
"We just love to browse there and see all their different odd things. I've gotten some unique Christmas gifts in there for my kids and things like that," said Chase.
"Something sitting idle is going to become productive is a wonderful thing," added DelPriore.
Work has yet to begin on the outside of the store, but the township says work is already underway inside. An opening date for Tractor Supply has not yet been set.
