DRUMS, Pa. — It's not your typical beach day at Beech Mountain Lake in Luzerne County.
Swimmers ran into the water in 50-degree weather to raise money for the Collaborative Autism Movement's second annual Plunge for Autism.
Lisa Moledini took the plunge last year and was excited to jump back into the water.
"I was a plunger today! I did it last year, and I came back again because it's just way too much fun. It's so much fun! You feel alive! It's invigorating! It's good for you," said Moledini.
Having some fun in support of autism awareness.
"Just trying to support, make it a little crazy, get everyone excited and gonna get cold," said Alexander van Hoekelen.
Participants donated $25 to the nonprofit. The event also included a 50/50 raffle, raffle baskets and food.
The Collaborative Autism Movement is raising these funds at the Polar Plunge event to provide individuals on the spectrum with free sensory haircuts and free photography sessions with their families.
Eileen Perchak is the executive director at Collaborative Autism Movement. She says the organization wanted to make a big splash for autism awareness.
"So we were like, 'what can we do? let's do something different.' So we all live locally here and decided, 'let's jump in the lake. We're in the lake all the time.' And it just kind of spiraled out and people just loved it and it's grown to one of our largest fundraisers," Perchak said.
More than 200 people attended the fundraiser near Drums.
'We couldn't do it without the support of some of our sponsors, the community, Beach Mountain. All the people that generously give," said Perchakl.
Perchak hopes to see familiar faces and hopefully some new ones at next year's Plunge for Autism.
