WILKES-BARRE -- A new supermarket in Wilkes-Barre has also provided job opportunities for dozens of people. For customers, it means the convenience of having a grocery store close by.
It didn't take long for shoppers to nearly fill the aisles of the new Save-A-Lot store on South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre. Employees held the grand opening of the store out front, but it was inside the store where we found lots of excited new shoppers.
"I don`t have to go very far now because it`s close, and I used to go to Sam's Club, and it`s a long way from here from where I live, but this one here is very close. It`s right on the corner for me," said Sonia Gomez of Wilkes-Barre.
This makes two Save-A-Lots in Luzerne County, the other one is in Hazleton. Store managers said they keep prices low to keep customers coming back.
"It`s close to me. They have a supermarket, and they closed and now it`s easy for me because it`s close to my house," said Silvia Medina of Wilkes-Barre.
Store managers said it was the folks who run Save-A-Lot who chose this location. They said they looked at maps and demographics and they found that here in Wilkes-Barre just made the most sense.
Nino Sartini lives only a few blocks away.
"For closeness, there are a lot of senior citizens right in this area right here and it will help out the highrise and the low-cost housing here and everything it will be a God send to them," said Sartini.
