LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — In Luzerne County, more than $1 million will be used to reclaim old coal mining land and make it into a space for renewable energy.
Senator Bob Casey made that announcement Monday in Hanover Township.
The nonprofit Earth Conservancy will use the funds to turn 3,000 acres of mine land into an energy park.
"We're able to get this project moving a lot quicker. If we had to stitch together the funding like we did before, this could be a 10 to 15-year project, but now we're looking at a 3 to 5-year project," said Terence Ostroski, Earth Conservancy President and CEO.
Earlier this year, the Earth Conservancy also received money to restore 16,000 acres of old mining land near Nanticoke.
