SCRANTON, Pa. -- Three schools in the Scranton School District will be closed Thursday.
Northeast Intermediate, Robert Morris Elementary, and Frances Willard Elementary will be closed for remediation.
These closings come just days after reports of asbestos and lead were found in some of the district's schools.
Now, Northeast Intermediate will be closed Thursday, Jan. 30, so crews can determine if asbestos was used in the building's original construction.
"I have to be there five days a week, and I don't know what I'm drinking or what I'm washing my hands with, and it's scary," said Northeast Intermediate eighth-grade student Taylor Stiltenpole.
Robert Morris and Frances Willard Elementary schools will both be closed until at least through the end of this week.
The school district says crews will be fixing and removing pipe fittings at Robert Morris, and Frances Willard is closed because walls and ceilings are deteriorating.
Barbara Richter's grandkids go to two of the schools that are closed.
She said, "I have to worry about what they have been drinking, what they have been touching, what's going on with any problems that they may have now. It's just very frustrating."
Richter is upset this wasn't dealt with sooner. Back in 2016, there was a voluntary district-wide lead test. School officials released the results in June and said some problematic water fountains and sinks would be fixed over the summer break.
It's unclear what or if anything was done to fix the problem.
They were supposed to fix this years ago, and they haven't, so now we're dealing with the mess and the cleanup and once again. The kids are the ones that suffer," added Richter.
The school district says the schools won't be able to reopen until air quality tests report safe conditions.
