LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — A decades-old church in Lackawanna County was demolished on Wednesday.
St. Mary Vilna Lithuanian Church along Third Street in Eynon has been closed since 2001.
Officials with the Diocese of Scranton say there was a mold problem inside, and it was too costly to repair it.
The church was built in the early 1900s and has welcomed many parishioners through its doors since then.
"I baptized my children, and they went to communion there, getting married there, lots and lots of memories. Christmas Eve mass and a lot of good memories," said Eileen Hawley, Eynon.
Officials with the diocese say once the site in Eynon is cleared, grass will be planted.
A cemetery on the property will also stay where it is.
