JIM THORPE -- Friday's sunny weather attracted a good crowd at Mauch Chunk Lake in Carbon County, but one of the three swimming areas was closed.
The problem?
Recruiting lifeguards has proven tough this year. Only six out of 10 jobs are currently filled.
Park Director Dave Horvarth says, "It is becoming harder to find lifeguards. This year, we only have six lifeguards. Normally, we have our positions filled by April. This year, we were not able to fill the positions that we have."
Horvarth says it is not too late to apply. Prospective lifeguards can file an application on the second floor of the Carbon County offices in Jim Thorpe.
Samantha McCarthy, 16, was on the job on Friday and says working at the lake is a great way to make summer money and get work experience.
She says, "I like being outside, and I love interacting with the people, and I love kids, and it looks good on college applications. I can't think of a better job for a teenage kid and it is fun. Never a dull moment."
