Making streets safer for pedestrians

Organizations are looking to make one of the city's busiest streets a safer place place for people to walk.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Halloween saw hundreds of Trick or treaters moving up and down the sidewalks along Main Avenue in Scranton Tuesday evening.

A safety concern for residents like Anthony Eramo.

"Main Avenue is extremely busy," said Eramo. "From morning, noon, night all day long every day."

That concern is why the group NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania is  using this holiday to test   temporary measures to see what improvements can be made.

"Definitely trying to make Main Ave. Permanently safer and the yield to pedestrian signage and the roll out crosswalks those or both permanent solutions that can happen," said Miranda Pace of West Scranton NeighborWorks.

She says these additions create visibility for walkers and others at any time of the day.

"When you are visible people are less likely to hit you, there are less likely to be crashes." said Pace.

Things like roll out crosswalks are just some of the temporary changes businesses and residents would like to see become permanent.

"They do it on mulberry street by the University of Scranton, they have the crosswalks there so cars, when people are walking by gotta stop make sure people can get through." Said Eramo I think it's great."

"Especially right around now, that's why we have improvements, that's why we have the road blocked off to keep the kids safe," Said Tyler Connors.

He and members of his families business have closed parking spaces for years so kids can stay safe.

Now he says the city is doing it's part.

"We get a lot of traffic here, we got more people down here," said Connor. "Just keep it as safe as possible."

NeighborWorks was taking feedback from trick or treaters today. The organization plans to continue working with PennDOT and the City of Scranton on   safe pedestrian walkway solutions.
