NANTICOKE, Pa. -- More than a dozen elementary school students in Nanticoke were on their way home Tuesday afternoon when their bus was hit by a Jeep. The frightening crash happened right in front of parents at a bus stop.

Police in Nanticoke tell Newswatch 16 none of those children was hurt, but charges are likely.

Parents held their children tight with tears in their eyes after their kids came off the bus.

Police say the school bus driver was pulling over to drop off elementary school children on Garfield Street when the Jeep collided with the bus.

"Very scared, shaken, distraught, thinking she wasn't alive," said Joseph Holminski of Nanticoke. "Basically, that's it. That was my main concern for all of the children, especially my granddaughter, and I love her so much."

Police say it appears the driver of the Jeep was speeding when it crashed head-on into the bus. People who live nearby say speeding is a serious issue on this tight, residential road.

"All the time there's people here speeding back and forth, back and forth, and they don't share the lanes," Heidi Winters of Nanticoke said. "We can't even walk on the sidewalk because it's so dangerous this road!"

Police say none of the 19 students on the bus was hurt, but airbags were deployed in both vehicles, and both drivers were sent to the hospital.

Melissa Nichols of Nanticoke saw the crash and says the Jeep went up in the air after it hit the bus.

"Heard screech marks, loud bang. The bus actually moved and all you saw was the Jeep when it hit, it lifted up and back to where it landed," Nichols said.

"God Bless all the kids, and the teachers, and the whole school," Holminski added. "Hopefully something can be done about all of this."

Police say both drivers are expected to be OK after the crash.
