DORRANCE TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Lots of people are hitting the road this weekend to squeeze one last trip in before the end of summer.

Road-weary travelers can find some relief at the rest area off of Interstate 81 north near Dorrance in Luzerne County.

The county Fire Police Association has set up a coffee break and snack stand for those looking to get some refreshments and stretch their legs.

The rest stop is an annual tradition for the association.

"We usually have coffee, lemonade, pastries, hot dogs, meatballs, and gives people a little break and a little something to eat and send them on their merry way, and a safe way," said association member Milton Bilby.

Milton says something special about this annual event is the people he meets and the stories they tell.

The Wicks from Canton, Georgia make an annual trip through the Keystone State.

"We're on our way to New York. It's her 60th class reunion and then from there, we're going up into Maine. I take her there every year for her birthday," Arthur Wicks said.

The wicks say in their 53 years of marriage, they've driven through 48 states and 9 Canadian provinces together. Newswatch 16 asked them how Pennsylvania compared.

"Pennsylvania's good, and like I say the roads was always bad before but now they seem to be getting a bit better," he said. "The farms look nice and even the mountains look nice."

While Newswatch 16 met many travelers making their way through Pennsylvania, we also met people from our area, just trying to enjoy the last bit of summer.

"Beautiful day, felt like riding the bike a little bit and I'm going to Harley Davidson down in Bloomsburg after I ride to Scranton," said Fred Bower fo Coal Township.

Many say Labor Day Weekend marks the end of summer. Motorcyclists like Bower are trying to take full advantage of the nice riding weather that's left.

"Enjoying the outside, enjoying the fresh air, sun feels good. Won't be long till we're not enjoying this too much longer."

These coffee break stops are open at some rest stops from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Luzerne County.

Everything is free but donations are accepted.
