Inmate Killed Inside USP Canaan

CANAAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Federal authorities are investigating after an inmate at the United States Penitentiary in Wayne County was killed this week.

Authorities at USP Canaan say Ricardo Martinez, 76, was killed Tuesday at the federal prison near Waymart.

The coroner say Martinez died as a result of injuries from an assault. His death was ruled a homicide.

His attacker has not been identified, but authorities believe the victim was killed by a fellow inmate.

The prison has a history of violence against both guards and inmates.

Three weeks ago, five corrections officers had to be hospitalized after being exposed to drugs they were trying to confiscate.

In 2018, an inmate was charged with assaulting two fellow inmates.

Back in 2013, corrections officer Eric Williams was killed by an inmate after being stabbed more than 200 times.

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Prisons are looking into the deadly attack here in Wayne County.

I want to add that Prison Staff have a tough job to do and they do a great job of it. Many of them are professionals with a proven record, some are Military Veterans and Retirees. They are highly trained and courageous people. I don’t think the critics of USP Canaan are in a position to judge since you don’t deal with hardened criminals.

Prisons are dangerous places, It’s a good reason not to go there. There is a prison justice system among the inmates, however informal. There are some bad dudes there for sure.. But some are not dangerous. Some are just caught up by over zealous lawmakers.
