Restaurant, Apartments Damaged by Flames

HAZLETON, Pa. — A restaurant and some apartments in Luzerne County were damaged by flames.

HAZLETON, Pa. -- A restaurant and some apartments in Luzerne County were damaged by flames.

Flames poured out of a commercial kitchen fan below two floors of apartments on North Wyoming Street in Hazleton, prompting a 911 call just before 11 a.m. Friday.

"At the same time, we had occupants hanging out the second-and-third-floor windows yelling for help," said Hazleton Fire Chief Donald Leshko.

The chief says the biggest challenge for the people living upstairs was that the fire was near the main exit, forcing a rescue by emergency responders.

"At the same time, while rescue was occurring, we had a crew in attacking the fire in the first floor rear of the building in the restaurant area."

The chief says everyone made it out safely, but six apartments above Prestige Restaurant and Lounge were damaged.

The chief says without the help of all the city's emergency resources, the outcome here could have been very different.

"The reason for that, the true teamwork and training that these firefighters endure, you know during the years, show and there was no loss of life or injuries," said Chief Leshko.

A state police fire marshal is looking into the cause of the fire.

The Red Cross is helping about 15 people forced out of their apartments.

The chief tells us the landlord of the building needs to make some repairs before they can go back inside.
