Public Outcry Continues as Former Scranton Mayor Pleads Guilty to Corruption Charges

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Callers continued their outcry at WILK Studios over the abrupt downfall of former Scranton Mayor Bill Courtright.

“The citizens of Scranton who are really outraged that this happened again, sort of like here we go again with the corruption,” said WILK DJ Rob Neyhard about all the calls and emails the station was getting.

Hours before the show went on air, Courtright was in federal court in Williamsport where he admitted taking money from businesses hoping to do work with the city.

Those who didn't pay, didn't get the job.

One of the first callers to the talk radio show; the man who brought the corruption charges against Courtright: U.S. Attorney David Freed.

“We're going to continue this investigation as far as it takes,” said Freed. “The agents who are working on this case are working on this case non-stop.”

Freed's call came after his office held a news conference at the federal courthouse in Scranton where freed said Courtright conspired with unnamed individuals to extort money.

“When the U.S. Attorney mentioned unindicted co-conspirators, that leads me to believe there's some people out there squirming,” said Neyhard.

Courtright is a life-long resident of Scranton, living in the city's west side. People there say what he has done both angers and hurts them.

“I'm shocked. I never saw this coming either. I knew him, his wife, his family, his mother, his father, very nice people,” said Paul Catalano, owner of Catalano, a popular Italian deli in west Scranton.

Both he and his customers say Courtright is now reaping what he sowed.

“Under the RICO act, Mafia were arrested for doing the same thing, extorting money from businesses,” said customer Robert Sparaney.

“I hope it sends a warning signal to everybody else who's seeking office in the future and everybody else who's voting for those people who's seeking office,” said Catalano.

The maximum penalty Courtright faces is 35 years in prison and $750,000 fine.

He is scheduled to be sentenced in November.

The downfall of cities…big and small…can be traced to when that city began electing democrats. When the takers outnumber (and outvote) the makers, the downward spiral is almost impossible to stop.

It is truly sad. Even more sad is that the folks who keep voting for democrats never seem to quite make the connection.

Keep on voting (D) NEPA… then you can be shocked by rain taxes and rampant corruption 🙄

In July, 1776, those who assembled in a Philadelphia congress agreed to the words contained within the first paragraph of their “unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America”. In that first paragraph are three (3) succinctly identified systemic solutions to a historically recurring problem. The recurring problem and those three solutions are as follows:
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to (1) dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and (2) to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should (3) declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

“I posted my comment and did not ask your opinion!”
As Moe Howard once said in a Stooges episode, “HEEP HEEP HEEP HOP HOP HOBBBEN!? JA? JA!!” There it is – the democrat mindset in a nutshell.

I am a democrat and will not change to a republican ever!!! There are PLENTY of corrupt republicans in this country ( we see them everyday) and its always a sad time when greedy people take advantage of the people who elected them to do right by the people who put them in office. So shame on you Bill Courtright and I hope you do the right thing by giving up all the rest of the criminals you have been in cahoots with so we can finally clean up this city and elect people who are worthy!

I didn’t realize Scranton had been destroyed which of these regressive ideas/policies did that? Hes going to jail for a long time good riddance to him but do not pretend there has never been a corrupted piece of trash republican the only people who will believe that are people in their conservative echo chambers and when people get stuck in those its very sad.

I think Bill didn’t grease enough palms higher up the DEMOCRAT food chain. A low-rent stooge like him is far from the top. Pennsylvania’s crawling with them from stem to stern.

To the people interviewed whom voted for Courtright I say stop being “shocked” and change your choice of political party. Unless of course you enjoy being “shocked” year after year. MAKE SCRANTON UNSHOCKED AGAIN!🇺🇸

A day without a political “perp walk” in “da valley” is like a day without sunshine. Stay classy Scranton.

Don’t forget, Courtright’s a DEMOCRAT and he’s been a DEMOCRAT all of his life. Yessir, he’s a DEMOCRAT right from the DEMOCRAT party. Remember, it’s spelled D-E-M-O-C-R-A-T.

Uh, oh…the downvotes are increasing. Methinks a flagging is in my very near future.

Scranton is only gonna keep getting worse! It’s loaded with corrupt people from every aspect! I’m so glad I moved out of there 12 years ago, the best thing I ever did
