WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- A summertime staple is underway in Luzerne County.

It's the annual Wilkes-Barre Farmers Market.

Bright and early Thursday morning folks were out getting ready for opening day, setting up for the first farmers market of the year in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

"I've been here for 35, 40 years now and it's always a great day to be back here on opening day. It's almost like Christmas!" said Ray Zimmerman of Zimmerman Farms.

The farmers market will be held from now through mid-November on Public Square in the city.

There are clothing stands, flowers, doggie treats and of course produce.

Farmers said a rainy spring delayed crops, but they are bouncing back.

"It's delayed everything a little bit, we're not too bad though. We caught up, we got a break from the rain you know the water," said Chris Dymond of Dymond Farm.

City officials said the market has drawn thousands.

They call it an important way for people to support local business and farms.

"Every year we look forward to this. It's consistent business every Thursday and you know just great people locally that come out and support you know local produce guys and farms and also us as vendors," said Carlo Luciano of Nico's Pizza and More.

"It's wonderful, we have a big following and lot of people that I've made friends with it's just great, great. Always fun to be here. It's my favorite one," said Melody Fuller of Jagger's Doggy Deli.

The market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Thursday through mid-November.
