BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- About 400 Bloomsburg University students were forced out of an off-campus apartment building early Friday morning. Bloomsburg police said a man visiting at the Honeysuckle Apartments threatened to harm himself.

Officers said he had a gun and they said that man fired shots, but no one was injured.

"It's crazy to think that it would happen in Bloomsburg. You don't think something like that would happen here," said Reagan Windl of Bloomsburg University.

"It was really just, get my stuff together, grabbed a sweatshirt and sandals, and I ran out of my apartment. Didn't even grab a phone charger, my phone's dead," she added.

The standoff lasted for hours, finally ending before 6 a.m. when the unidentified man surrendered to police.

"The officers began a dialogue with him. This individual was a male, a nonstudent who was visiting here at the time. He…came out to police officers and is now in police custody," said Bloomsburg Acting Police Chief Leonard Rogutski.

During the standoff, Bloomsburg University officials sent out messages on social media, telling students about the incident and urging them to be cautious.

"I think the university reacted really well to it. They had a SWAT team on the scene pretty quickly and they evacuated all the apartments. They had an evacuation zone all set up so the students were safe," said Matthew Baldwin, a Bloomsburg University student.

Police said the man was taken to a hospital and will face criminal charges for the stand-off.

Bloomsburg University officials say the campus is open, graduation is on, and finals are on for today. Everything is back on schedule after the overnight situation in Bloomsburg.
