MOOSIC, Pa. — It was 30 years ago that Minor League Baseball returned to Lackawanna County in the form of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons.

Before that, there hadn’t been professional baseball in this area in nearly 40 years.

We take a special look back to the work that went into getting the stadium ready for that first game in 1989.

The first game was played at what was then Lackawanna County Stadium on April 26, 1989. A sellout crowd of about 11,000 fans watched the Red Barons take the field against Tidewater.

Our entire news team was live at the stadium that night as seen in this trip into the Video Vault.

A dedication ceremony is planned for Saturday at 2 p.m. to name the entrance road to the PNC Field in honor of John McGee, the man credited with bringing baseball back to northeast Pennsylvania.
