MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A state police fire marshal was digging through what was left of a mobile home on Cottontail Lane near Bushkill.

Flames destroyed the place around 5:30 p.m. Monday.  One woman was found dead inside.

Michael VanWhy owns the property but says he wasn't home when the fire broke out.

"When I got here, the flames were as high as my building there, and I already knew something wasn't right," said VanWhy.

According to the fire marshal, there is too much damage to determine where the flames might have started. Right now, they are just focusing on trying to positively identify the woman who was found inside.

According to the property owner, the woman living inside the mobile home was a longtime friend of his. She moved in in November.

"I was just helping her out. She got put out in the cold, and I just didn't want anyone to be out in the cold," said VanWhy.

VanWhy says he plans to clean up this lot, but for now, he's still trying to understand everything that happened.

"You got to take time and realize what happened," said VanWhy.

The Monroe County coroner says an autopsy and DNA testing on the victim is scheduled for Wednesday.
