HUGHESTOWN, Pa. -- Whipping winds blew across Pennsylvania Sunday night, bringing down trees and wires.
PPL reported more than 1,000 homes and businesses in our area without power Sunday night.
A high wind warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Monday. That warning extends to most of northeastern and central Pennsylvania.
There were several reports of trees and wires down across the area including on Searle Street in Hughestown, Luzerne County where Newswatch 16 found a tree that came down on a porch.
That's the major concern for winds like this.
"You're going to wake up to some uprooted trees, some power outages, damage to cars, things like that. It's coming," said Zayne Cantler from Out on a Limb Tree Care.
The wind whipping around Bloomsburg Sunday night and Monday caught many by surprise.
"Too windy! A lot of tree limbs down, a lot of garbage cans and everything laying in the road when I came up," said Charles Fisher of Montour Township.
"It's when you're out a little further that it gets dangerous. My sister lives up on top of River Hill. It'll be a wind tunnel up there," said Ruth Robinson of Bloomsburg.
Driving warnings were posted along roadways warning of the high winds.
The wind advisory also meant gusts strong enough to down tree limbs and trees and utility lines, too.
Traffic signals were out in some places like the New Berwick Highway in Columbia County.
At one point, PPL reported more than a thousand businesses and homes in the dark.
"Around 9:45 everything went black, just dark and I said, 'Oh, my gosh.' it wasn't even a flicker. I was going to say there was a flicker but there wasn't. It just went dark like that and nothing came on," said Ron Schutt of Bloomsburg.
No power all night for some with temperatures below freezing created a frustrating situation.
"This is the worst wind we've seen in a long time. We just bundled up with blankets, if it's out tonight, we're going to go to a hotel. If we can find one," said Bill Greenly if Main Township.
The Dunkin' Donuts in Bloomsburg normally a very busy spot, but the place was dark and locked Monday morning because of the power outage.
"I came in for my 7 o'clock shift and out of nowhere I was like 'The lights are off.' I was like oh! What's going on and somebody told me it's been off since like 9:30 p.m. last night. I was like 'whoa!' said employee Marjorie Sherwood.
It makes travel difficult, too. Driving in windy conditions can be tough as well.
"Yeah, I was coming down the interstate and it was blowing me all over the place, said Joey Jackson of Pottsville. "I gotta keep my son safe!"
