CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — It’s a big day for the Lackawanna Trail Lions and local pride is at an all-time high.
The Lackawanna Trail Lions football team is making history on Thursday.
Lion pride was at an all-time high Thursday morning. Despite the icy air, a crowd cheered on the Lackawanna Trail Lions football team as players and coaches boarded a bus bound for the state championship game in Hershey.
“Our town is so proud of these boys. I think if it was driving rain they would be here, it is just proud. I don’t know any other word to use but proud,” said Cindy Edwards of Lake Sheridan, whose son plays on the team.
“It is the best feeling in the world to see everyone come out and support our team!” said Sandra Dunckle of Fleetville, whose son is a player on the team.
Cheerleaders followed the team to Chocolate Town and two busloads of fans did, too.
School was canceled for the day so everyone could watch the action.
“We were dressed head to toe red, we all had makeup, we are supporting this team. We are really excited!” said Colette Brisson, a Lackawanna Trail student.
Fans said they love this team and making school history with this first state championship game.
“They’re a great group of kids and they deserve everything that comes to them. The community has rallied around them and it’s just been a special season,” said Lackawanna Trail Junior/Senior High principal Mark Murphy
It was a sea of red and back inside the school auditorium Wednesday night for a pep rally where players and coaches got a standing ovation.
The State 1A game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, in Hershey.
The Lions are taking on Farrel, a team from northwestern Pennsylvania.
Karen Rolka, a mother of a football player, said, “You can’t even put it into words. No one really picked them to win the division this year and to be saying that we’re going to the state championship, it’s just amazing.”
“It is electric. It is so exciting! Our town has so much heart and they are so proud of our boys. It’s hard to put into words,” added Edwards.
The team left around 8 a.m. on Thursday to head to Hershey with a big send-off from community members.
