SCRANTON, Pa. -- Sen. Bob Casey has declared victory in his bid for a third term in the US Senate, defeating Republican challenger Lou Barletta.

All four of Casey's daughters helped introduce their father for his victory rally at the Scranton Cultural Center.

Before taking the stage, the senator took a phone call from his opponent Lou Barletta.

Casey said the two talked about their families and talked about getting together to see if they can work together on issues facing Pennsylvania.

"I'm so grateful for that phone call.  In this difficult time for our nation, to have a phone call like that between two people running against each other was I guess something we don't see enough of in American politics," Casey said.

Casey did eventually talk politics. He promised to continue the fight to force insurers cover people with pre-existing conditions, and he called for both parties to come up with plan and the money to rebuild crumbling roads, bridges, and other parts of our aging infrastructure.

Casey said most Americans want Congress to come together and get things done.

While Casey's campaign was confident throughout the race, the senator himself said, in his Senate races, he's been lucky that every time he's been up for election, it's happened during good cycles to be a Democrat.

Casey, the two-term senator from Scranton, also served as Pennsylvania Auditor General and Treasurer. He is the son of Bob Casey Sr., who served as governor of Pennsylvania from 1987 to 1995.

Casey defeated GOP incumbent Sen. Rick Santorum in 2006 and was re-elected in 2012, defeating Republican Tom Smith.
