Purple Pinwheels Placed to Mark Domestic Violence Awareness

STROUDSBURG, Pa. — If you walk past the Monroe County Courthouse, you will see hundreds of purple pinwheels.

STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Spinning with the wind, more than 900 purple pinwheels were carefully placed into the ground in front of the Monroe County Courthouse.

Rina Morris from Stroudsburg was at nearby Cafe Duet watching as each one was put into place.

"I think it's beautiful. I think it's definitely really nice to show representation for people who have been victims and for them to see that they have been heard," said Rina Morris, Stroudsburg.

The display is in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Women's Resources of Monroe County placed 911 pinwheels into the ground to represent survivors of domestic violence.

"It's an eye opener for people to walk by and say, wow, that's a lot, that's a lot and each one represents an actual human being. It's an extremely powerful exhibit that we have here," said Lauren Peterson, Women's Resources of Monroe County.

This is actually a traveling exhibit, so you'll see it in more places than just downtown Stroudsburg. Some people we spoke to say it's a great way to show people that help is near.

Tom Burbage is a volunteer at the Women's Resources Center.

"It makes me think about just how big the problem is and how much needs to be done. Unfortunately, there are so many families in this county and elsewhere who are impacted by domestic violence and most of the time you don't hear about it," said Tom Burbage, Volunteer.

A candlelight vigil for survivors of domestic violence and a 5K walk are scheduled for later this month.
