SCOTT TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A recent high school graduate was killed in a crash in Lackawanna County Friday night.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Chapman Lake Road and Rushbrook Road in Scott Township.

The Lackawanna County coroner said Joseph Maddage, 18, of Carbondale, was killed after his car collided with another vehicle and hit a utility pole.

Three others were taken to the hospital.

Friends of Maddage gathered at the scene of the crash on Saturday and made a memorial with candles.

Carbondale Area School District's superintendent tells Newswatch 16 Maddage was a 2018 graduate and a member of the Chargers football team.

Superintendent Bob Mehalick released a statement saying, in part, "Those that knew Joe best, will recall his tremendous sense of humor and his caring nature for everyone he met as some of his most amazing characteristics. Our school community will cherish our wonderful memories of Joe and know we are so fortunate to have been a part of his life."

Mehalick said counselors will be available beginning Monday morning.
