MOUNT POCONO, Pa. -- Zachary Collett from Maryland is facing homicide charges.

Investigators say Collett shoved his girlfriend, Brianna Burkhart, also of Maryland, onto the road during a fight on Route 611 near Mount Pocono.

The pair was passing through the Poconos and had just left a nearby bar. Court papers say they were fighting over a bar tab.

Burkhart was hit and killed by a car.

According to court papers, the driver who hit Burkhart is an 18-year-old woman from Tobyhanna.

She stopped after she realized she hit a person. Police say she is not being charged.

"There are rules of the road with pedestrians as well. Those rules are established for situations just like this where it's difficult for a driver in a vehicle to see someone in dark colored clothing in the middle of a roadway. So that's why there are rules for pedestrians walking upon roadways and certainly, in this instance, the law does not permit people to be in the middle of a four-lane highway engaged in a domestic dispute," said Chief Chris Wagner of Pocono Mountain Regional Police.

The judge denied bail and Zachary Collett is locked up in Monroe County jail.

He is scheduled to be back in court next Thursday.
