UNION TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Flames damaged a high school in Luzerne County.

Fire crews were called to Northwest Area High School near Shickshinny around 3 p.m. Saturday.

Firefighters smashed windows and cut holes into the roof to vent out all the smoke.

The fire was knocked down quickly.

A state police fire marshal is looking into the cause.

There is no word if the damage will affect the start of the school year.

The school's principal sent an email to teachers and parents saying a decision will be made once there's a better idea of how much cleanup is needed.

On Sunday, school administrators held a meeting to decide if the damage will push back their start date.

Inspectors, engineers, and school officials are set to check out the building on Monday, August 20.

According to officials, school will not start on August 28. The in-service days scheduled for Thursday, August 23, and Friday, August 24, have been postponed.
