SALEM TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A man from New Jersey is accused of trying to run people over at a park in Wayne County.

State police say Christopher Gaffney, 56, of Manchester, New Jersey, was driving drunk and nearly ran over several people on the walking track at Salem Township Park near Hamlin Monday morning.

"That's scary. What if he did run those people over?" said Theresa Heffner.

Heffner heard about the scare. She and friend Kelly Elder can't believe it would happen here.

"It's crazy. Kids are here all the time. Kids play sports here for school. There's birthday parties here," Elder said.

"It's kind of crazy. It could happen while we're here. I'm not scared. I don't go out thinking that's going to happen because this area doesn't have those things happen," Heffner added.

You can still see a lot of tire tracks in the park where troopers finally caught up with Gaffney after that wild ride Monday morning.

In court papers, troopers say Gaffney smelled of alcohol and told them he's building a house in The Hideout and became overwhelmed.

"It's crazy, honestly, in this area, you never think someone would be trying to run you over. But I guess it happens. There's been some crazy stuff going on," Zoey Rosensweet said.

No one was hurt.

Gaffney is locked up on DUI, reckless endangerment, and careless driving charges.
